{"id":719,"date":"2016-09-22T13:49:33","date_gmt":"2016-09-22T19:49:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gofranklingo.com\/blog\/?p=719"},"modified":"2018-07-13T02:01:20","modified_gmt":"2018-07-13T08:01:20","slug":"65-north-american-companies-remove-go-paperless-go-green-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.gofranklingo.com\/index.php\/2016\/09\/22\/65-north-american-companies-remove-go-paperless-go-green-claims\/","title":{"rendered":"65 North American Companies Remove &#8220;Go Paperless \u2013 Go Green\u201d Claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"row\">\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-12 col-md-12 textblock\">\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>Two Sides Campaign Continues to Gain Traction as Major Brand Name Companies Change Marketing Campaigns Used to Promote Electronic Services<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-12 col-md-12 textblock\">\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>CHICAGO (September 22, 2016) &#8211; Today, Two Sides North America, Inc. confirmed that over 65 leading North American companies have removed inaccurate anti-paper claims as a result of the group\u2019s efforts.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The list includes several Fortune 100 companies in the financial, telecom and utilities sectors who have engaged in a dialogue with Two Sides and modified their marketing messages to consider the social and environmental benefits of print and paper, as well as the life cycle of sustainable forests and paper products.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018go green and save trees\u2019 claims are misleading and false for many reasons, and they are a form of greenwashing that needs to be corrected,\u201d said Phil Riebel, President of Two Sides North America, Inc.\u00a0 \u201cThe claims don\u2019t consider the renewability of paper, or the numerous social, environmental, and economic benefits of well-managed North American forests, which in the U.S. have grown by 58% in wood volume over the past 60 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>As part of its campaign, Two Sides also notes that it is false to associate paper with deforestation in North America. \u00a0Deforestation is defined by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization as the conversion of forests to another land use or a permanent loss of forest cover.\u00a0 The UN definition specifically excludes sustainably managed forests where the forest is expected to regenerate naturally or via tree planting.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Consumers are not buying environmental claims used to promote digital, according to new research commissioned by Two Sides.\u00a0\u00a0 A June 2016 survey conducted by Toluna showed that 85% of respondents believe companies making negative green claims about paper are seeking to save costs.\u00a0 An overwhelming majority of 88% of respondents believe it is environmentally friendly to produce products such as wood for construction and paper for printing, as long as resources are responsibly managed.\u00a0 An even higher percentage (91%) agreed that, when responsibly produced, used and recycled, print and paper can be sustainable ways to communicate.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Two Sides is urging companies to avoid greenwashing consumers by using best marketing practices that meet guidelines established by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Competition Bureau of Canada.\u00a0 Environmental claims cannot be vague and unsubstantiated.\u00a0 They must be specific, verifiable and based on credible facts.\u00a0 \u201cOur experience to date is that many companies are so focused on saving money that they have ignored the environmental and social impacts of switching from paper to e-media\u2014and these impacts are far from negligible,\u201d said Riebel.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>To see more about Two Sides campaign go to: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twosidesna.org\/Anti-Greenwash-Campaign\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.twosidesna.org\/Anti-Greenwash-Campaign<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>About Two Sides<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Two Sides is an independent, nonprofit organization created to promote the responsible production, use and sustainability of print and paper.\u00a0 Two Sides is active globally in North America, Europe, Australia, South Africa, Brazil and Colombia.
